BRIAN BORU – THE LAST GREAT HIGH KING OF IRELAND, KILLALOE.
Brian Boru was no legend although his life deeds were legendary. He was very much a real man and was in fact the last great High King of Ireland and perhaps the greatest military leader the country has ever known.
He was high-king of Ireland from 1002 until his death in 1014 AD. His headquarters was the nearby Ceann Cora (in English Kincora) which is located one mile from here in the picturesque village of Killaloe. His death came during the battle of Clontarf against the Norsemen ( Vikings), a battle which was to claim Boru’s life, but which he won nonetheless.
